Hello beauties! Welcome back to Haleys Beauty Room. I know I have been a little MIA lately, things have just been so crazy. Anyway, I did a poll on my Facebook page asking if you wanted to know my thoughts on on the infamous Younique Moonstruck mascara and every single one of you said yes!
I do want to preface this review with these are my own thoughts and I purchased the item with my own money. This review is not sponsored is any way whatsoever. Without any further ado, let’s get into it.
What Is Younique?
If you’re not familiar with Younique, it is a direct cosmetic sales company. You will most likely see it advertised on social media. Their mission is “to uplift, empower, and validate women across the globe.” Their goal is to “give women a chance to grow both personally and financially through selling Younique products.”
The product I tested is the Younique Moonstruck Epic Mascara. It is the product most frequently advertised. It comes in two shades, black and brown, but there is an option to get the black in a waterproof version. The version I tested is the original black.

My First Impression & Final Thoughts
I have been using this product frequently for about 6 months now. I have worn this through full work days, nights out, light makeup days, and through the winter cold and summer heat.
My initial impressions on this product was that it really did separate the lashes and provide a lot of volume. I liked how intense the black was and that the mascara didn’t really clump at all. However, I did find that I needed to use about three coats to get it where I really wanted it for thickness and look. That was not a huge deal, but just remember that three coats takes more time when getting ready and it also uses up more product faster.
The volume and thickness definitely held up throughout the day, but the big no-no for me was that every single time I wore this product it flaked off onto my face. No matter if I used a lash primer or not, if the weather was great or not, or even if I just sat around all day, it flaked. I will say that this never smudged on my face or lower lash line, which is great, however, the flaking thing really put me off.
To really put this mascara to the test, I want to insert a side by side comparison of what this looks like on my lashes after initial application with the L’Oréal Lash Paradise. This is application on just one eye and it is only one coat on each eye. The Younique is in shade black, while the L’Oréal is in shade black brown.
As you can see, although the Younique Moonstruck looks good, the L’Oréal just looks all around more voluminous, full, and separated. A big plus is that the Loreal never flakes off, smudges, or does anything else bad throughout the day. I am not wearing any eyeliner, shadow or anything else on my eyes.
While the product is not bad, I have a hard time believing that it’s worth $24. I specifically wanted to put in the other prices above because as you can see, this is priced similarly to other “prestige” brands. I personally take that as Younique saying their product is of the same quality as Too Faced, Tarte, Benefit, Urban Decay, etc. As you can see from my comparison, the L’Oréal is better and comes in at less than half the price of the Younique Moonstruck.
So do I recommend? I don’t. Not because I have anything against Younique, but because the product doesn’t hold up to drugstore options and is way too overpriced. I don’t like that it flakes on my face and it requires three coats on my lashes for me to get it where I want it. I say stick to drugstore options for mascara to save time, money, and quality.
