Welcome back to Haley’s Beauty Room! Now I want to preface this by saying that high-end makeup is by no means bad or ineffective. There will be duds of products on both ends of the price spectrum. Will I continue to buy expensive makeup? Most likely. If I had to choose between drugstore and high-end by tomorrow? Drugstore all the way.
I find that I am reaching for my drugstore brands way more than I am high-end lately. I also get much more excited for drugstore and affordable brand launches than I do high-end. Let’s break down my top reasons why you should ditch high-end makeup.
#1 Price doesn’t equal quality
Just because you’re paying more money, doesn’t mean the product will be of better quality or be more effective. I have come across many drugstore options that perform just as well or even better than high-end options.
Why would I pay double or triple the price when I can get the same thing at a much lower cost?
The e.l.f. Jelly Pop Dew Primer is an amazing gripping primer that I am obsessed with that is a serious dupe that’s actually better than the MILK Makeup Hydro Grip Primer.
#2 Drugstore brands have stepped up their game
Five years ago I wouldn’t have been caught dead with some drugstore makeup. There was just this idea surrounding it that it was cheap and didn’t work well. Fast forward to today and most of my collection has become drugstore! The products are definitely on par with high-end makeup and plenty are even better! With the release of many online brands like Colourpop, that offer affordable make at high quality, it’s no surprise that drugstore has stepped up their game. High-end, they coming for you hun.
Bh Cosmetics has some of the best drugstore eyeshadows and powders you will ever come across. This Desert Oasis palette combines eye shadows with face powders at a super affordable price with great quality.
#3 Expiration dates
Yes, makeup does have an expiration date! Let’s take mascara for example. It is recommend that mascara is thrown out after 3 months. I don’t know about you, but I NEVER use a full mascara up in three months.
If I continually bought mascara that was $25 for one tube and replaced every three month, that’s $100 a year just on mascara!
If you’re trying to adhere to makeup expiration dates, definitely go the drugstore route so if you need to throw it out sooner than expected, you aren’t throwing away as many dollar signs.
The best drugstore mascara I have ever used is by far the L’Oreal Lash Paradise.
#4 Color selection
I’m not talking just for foundation shades, although the drugstore is really kicking butt in that department, but just in general the drugstore has a wider range of color selection for eyeshadow, lip colors, powders, etc.
One of my fave concealers that has an amazing color selection is the Conceal and Define from Makeup Revolution. This bad boy comes in 50 shades!
Another great product to check out are the NYX Slim Lip Pencils. These lip liners comes in 41 shades. No doubt you’ll match that new lipstick.
This is kind of a no-brainer, but in my opinion, drugstore options are much more accessible than high-end makeup. Typically for high-end makeup you need to visit a department store, Sephora, Ulta, order online, etc. Drugstore makeup you can just waltz into your local shop and typically find something.
I am from the smallest town ever in Wisconsin, so I would have to drive 90 minutes just to get to the nearest Ulta or Sephora, but Walmart was only 15 minutes away. Which do you think is more accessible?
