How I Saved $950 on Designer Clothes

How I Saved $950 on Designer Clothes

Welcome back to Haley’s Beauty Room! Did you know that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world? It is only second to the oil industry. Often when we wear our everyday items, we don’t think about what will happen to them once we are done with them.

I’ve recently been on a mission to live a much more socially conscience life. Recycle, reuse, and repurpose have become the three words of my life. By doing some quick research you can see that a single t-shirt takes 700 gallons of water to produce and 26 billion pounds of clothing end up in landfills every year.

In conjunction with living more sustainably for our planet, it’s obviously important to us all how much money we spend. We all want nice things, but sometimes it’s hard to justify the price tag for that Michael Kors purse or Tory Burch sandals. What if I told you that you could not only reduce your environmental footprint, but also get designer items at a fraction of the price?

Introducing ThredUP. ThredUP is a fashion resale website to buy and sell secondhand clothing online. They sell products from over 35,000 brands at up to 90% retail prices. If you’re worried that the quality won’t be in the items from purchasing online, don’t! ThredUP only accepts about 40% of boxes sent into them and they undergo a serious quality check.

ThredUP’s circular fashion economy initiative supports non-profit organizations and epicycle programs to engage fashion retailers in a circular economy.

How It Works

Buy

Of course you can buy the items, that’s what this post is all about! Set up an account and set your sizes so that no matter what category you pick, it automatically filters the selection for you.

ThredUP adds 30,000 new items to the site every single day. Since receiving my order, I have been checking out the selection almost every day. I can almost find something! Shop through the site or download the app for easy browsing.

You can also favorite items and add them to your cart for a period of time. If an item is sold, the site lets you know so you can find other items that are similar.

I also suggest signing up for emails, as there are new specials every single day. For my first order I got a bunch of items that were already on sale, plus an additional 40% off!

Sell

If you’re looking to get rid of some items in your closet, you can order a Clean Out Kit and send in your items and get credit to use on the site. Any items that ThredUP doesn’t accept can either be sent back to you or sustainably recycled.

In addition, you can also get a Donation Kit. Instead of receiving credit to use on the site, ThredUP will donate $5 to a charity of your choice. You can then get a donation tax receipt.

Why I Love It

I feel like I don’t even need to expand upon this part! The clothes are designer, amazing quality, the best price ever, and I’m doing something sustainable for the planet. Plus, you literally have thousands of choices to choose from.

I wore the Calvin Klein jacket to my law school open house and I got stopped so many times from people asking me where I got my jacket. Most people couldn’t believe it was secondhand, that’s how great they are.

I immediately wore the Halogen blazer to work and got a ton of compliments as well. The clothes are legit!

Can I Return Items?

Of course! ThredUP offers three methods for returning items.

  1. Print their free shipping label and get refunded with store credit
  2. Pay $8.99 for a shipping label and be refunded your original method of payment
  3. Create your own shipping label and be refunded your original method of payment

Final Thoughts

I am extremely pleased with my ThredUP order and experience. The clothes are great, I saved a ton of money ($950 to be exact!), and everything was super easy to use and find. I know I will always be able to find something on the site and the shipping is very timely as well. Often you will get free shipping g!

I think this is the only way I will search for clothes again! Oh yeah, they also have jewelry, shoes, and bags, so get shopping!
