Welcome back to Haley’s Beauty Room! This post is the start of my NEW blog schedule! That’s right, I have finally decided on a consistent schedule for posting that covers all topics on my blog.
Here is basically what I am going for:
- Skincare Sunday (this post)
- Makeup Monday
- Workout Wednesday
- Fashion Friday
Now back into what you really came here for! Collagen, is it the anti-aging key? There is a lot of speculation on whether or not our bodies can actually use the collagen placed in skincare products or supplements. I am not a doctor or scientist, so most of this is going to be based off of my personal experience and my research. I highly recommend doing your own research and consulting with your physician before starting any new supplement or regimen.
What is collagen?
Collagen is defined as “the main structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues, widely used in purified form for cosmetic surgical treatments.” Collagen is the most abundant protein found in our bodies, but that abundance decreases as we age or put more stress on our bodies.
Collagen is a protein made up of amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, all of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, and nails. Collagen is probably the most important in our skin, as it makes up 30% of the protein in our body but 70% in our skin.
This is typically why a lot of anti-aging products or supplements boast collagen as a main ingredient. Many collagen supplements are not FDA-approved, but there have been multiple studies that show collagen does have beneficial affects.
What are the beauty benefits of collagen?
- It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- It can help with inflammatory skin conditions, like eczema or psoriasis
- Reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks
- Provide healthy hair and nails
- Increase the body’s natural moisture level
- Support a healthy glow
How can I increase my collagen levels?
Personally, I have gotten the best results by doing a multitude of things. First, using skincare products that contain collagen. if you’re looking for an affordable option, definitely try the Physician’s Formula 24k Gold Collagen Serum.
If you are willing to spend a bit more, the Murad Rapid Collagen Infusion Serum is probably your best bet out there. There are many creams and products on the market, just make sure you are using one where collagen is the main ingredient.
Take collagen supplements. This can be in the form of pills or powder. The brand Vital Proteins has a ton of different collagen powders that have rave reviews. I have tried their Marine Collagen Powder, and although the results were good, I just couldn’t get over the fishy taste.
Consume foods that contain collagen. Bone broth, wild salmon, leafy greens, citrus, eggs, berries, tomatoes, and chia seeds are all good options to get more collagen into your diet.
Cosmetic procedures of course are another route you can take to get collagen into your body. Many wrinkle fillers contain collagen or hyaluronic acid. I myself have considered getting this for the fine lines under my eyes, but it all comes down to personal preference. Obviously this would be the most expensive route to go.
My belief is that using the three methods of skincare, supplements, and food is really your best bet for seeing results. This way, you are increasing your collagen levels internally, as well as externally. It’s kind of like, yes, you need good skincare products all over your body for a glowing complexion, but it also is important to consume enough water to keep your skin plump. Treat yourself on the outside and inside!
