Summer is just around the corner! That means we’ll all be spending less time indoors and more time outside. Whether it be the beach, playing sports, or just hanging out, you need to ensure you protect yourself from the summer sun. Of course my main focus is always skincare.
I am a skincare junkie at heart and am crazy about preserving my skin’s integrity. Your skin is your largest organ, so let’s keep it healthy!
Sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen!
I’m sure you’re tired of hearing this, but sunscreen is so important! Even if you are just reaching for SPF 15, that is better than nothing. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using at least SPF 30 when you are outdoors. You also need to make sure you apply every two hours and still wear sunscreen even on cloudy days.
As someone who has seen skin cancer throughout her family (the most common form of cancer in the US), I seriously beg you all to wear sunscreen and avoid tanning beds! If you don’t want to deal with greasy sunscreen or the smell of SPF, I highly recommend any product from the brand Sun Bum. This is the only suncreen I reach for as it moisturizes my skin, smells like a vacation, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue or film. It also doesn’t clog the pores on my face and break me out.
If you’re looking to get a tan, try doing it the safer way with self tanner. Check out my recent post on How To Achieve the Perfect Bronze Goddess Makeup Look for more details!
Keep Those Lips Protected
You may not believe it, but your lips can easily get sunburnt as well. Not only can they be burnt, the sun is also extremely drying on your lips. Keep them hydrated and protected with a lip balm that contains SPF.
Try Coola’s Mineral Liplux that has SPF 30. This product contains Organic Cupuacu Butter and Mongongo Oil to keeps your lips hydrated and soft, while also having a natural tint for luscious lips.
Avoid the sun at certain times
It is said that the sun is the strongest from 10 am – 2 pm. That means you should avoid being out in the sun during that time in order to protect yourself from the harmful UV rays. I just found out that you can actually track your local UV forecast from an app called SunZapp AND it reminds you when to reapply sunscreen! I will definitely get lots of use out of that this season.
Bring out extra protection from cosmetics
You may have heard that cosmetics products containing SPF can cause a white flashback in photos. That is true, but you really have to be applying a lot of product for that to happen. Plus, when you use SPF in makeup, it’s typically for daily wear and you won’t be using flash on your camera anyway!
Using cosmetics that have SPF provides your skin with an added layer of protection from the sun. This helps premature aging and sun spots from forming on your face.
A lot of foundations contain SPF, like my absolute fave the Physicians Formula The Healthy Foundation, but you can also get SPF in mineral makeup or face powders.
Take your daily vitamins
UV exposure leads to the formation of destructive free radicals. These free radicals bring on premature aging and wrinkly, crepey skin. Dietary antioxidants can boost the body’s ability to fight off these free radicals.
So when you’re heading out for a long day in the sun, don’t forget to take your vitamins!
Eye care with UVA/UVB protection
Another obvious one, but you really need to protect your eyes from damaging UVA/UVB rays. Not only does this eye care protect your actual eyes, but it also keeps the delicate skin around your eyes protected as well.
Typically we see signs of aging in this area first, so protecting it as much as we can is key.
Try a hat
Wide brimmed, floppy hats are your best friend this time of year. They protect not only your face from the sun, but also your ears, neck, and part of your chest.
Pair it with some big shades and you’ll look bougie AF.
