How To Make Your Makeup Last All Day

Welcome back to Haley’s Beauty Room and for Day 14 of Blogmas! I’m sure you are getting tired of that little intro that I do, but I have to do it for the season! So speaking of the season, I’m sure most of you are headed to holiday parties, family get togethers, and braving it shopping out in the cold weather.

Well, does your makeup just not hold up through all of that? Do you need to look fabulous all night for the holidays, but your foundation keeps breaking up or mascara is running? I am here to share my top tips with you on how to keep your makeup looking great all day or all night! So, if you are interested in my tips, then keep on reading!

Your skincare is step number 1

Hydrated, exfoliated skin is one of the key steps in keeping your makeup on all day. Exfoliate at least twice a week to smooth out your complexion. Try using a chemical exfoliant versus a physical one for a less abrasive and more effective technique. I love The Ordinary AHA+BHA Peeling Solution, which is only $7!

Using a toner after cleansing and exfoliating will balance out the pH of your skin for a smoother and brighter appearance, which will also help any complexion products stay looking smoother, longer. In the winter, I go for a hydrating toner, such as the Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner, which contains natural antiseptics and moisture binding proteins.

Finally, you must moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I don’t care if you have oily skin, you need to moisturize! This will provide the best canvas for your face makeup to stay looking fresh all day. If you have dry skin, get a heavy duty moisturizer like the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Deep Moisture Balm.

If you have oily skin, go for an oil-free moisturizer or gel cream that absorbs quickly, but still provides some protection for your skin.

Prime, Prime, and then prime some more

If you are having issues with your makeup not lasting, primer needs to be your new best friend. Make sure you are using a primer for your face, as well as your eyes.

There are many primers out there to address different concerns, but try a primer to keep your makeup in place all day. A primer will also help smooth out any lines or pores, preventing your makeup from settling in those areas.

If you have dry skin, check out my recent post on my top hydrating primers here. These primers keep your skin glowing while also keeping your makeup fresh all day.

For oily skin or those who need to minimize pores, check out my top pore minimizing primers post, here.

For your eyes, I actually like using a heavy duty concealer, as my eyelids have some hyper-pigmentation. That is a great route to go, otherwise, my favorite eyeshadow primer is the Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eyeshadow Primer. This will keep your shadows in check all day, plus, it also doubles as an under eye concealer primer to keep concealers form creasing.

Heavy duty foundation

I don’t meant literally heavy, but a foundation that is marketed to last at least 8 hours is best. My favorite for this is the Estee Lauder Double Wear, perfect coverage that will not budge for at least 12 hours.

For a more affordable option, give the L’Oreal Infallible collection a try. They offer a pro-matte version, a pro-glow version, and a total cover version. These foundations last all day and look great on the skin. I love to mix my pro glow with the total cover for the perfect finish and coverage.

Setting spray after foundation

This is actually a trick I picked up from one of my favorite Youtubers. After you have applied your liquid or cream foundation, spray your entire face liberally with your favorite setting spray.

After spraying, take your sponge and lightly go over your whole face again, pressing the liquid into the foundation. This will bring more moisture back to dry skin, give your foundation something else to lock on to, and smooth out the rest of your face.

It sounds weird, but this trick really does work!

Set your creams with powders

Even if you have dry skin, you need to set your face with either a translucent powder or matching powder to your foundation. This will provide a cover to keep your foundation locked in and long lasting.

For an event, definitely do the matching powder, as it will provide more coverage for flawless skin.

Layer your products

As you have noticed from reading my other tips, all of these product are layered. Adding light layers will provide more coverage that is unmovable and flawless all day.

Waterproof products

Probably an obvious one, but for events especially, try waterproof products, like mascara and eyeliner. This will prevent smudging and fading from natural bodily functions.

Waterproof concealers are also a great option if you have trouble with concealer constantly creasing. I love the Catrice Liquid Camouflage Concealer. This super affordable option covers everything and is waterproof for no budging!

Lip liners are your friends

If your lipstick is smudging or fading quickly, make sure you are using a good lip liner. Lip liner prevents the feathering of lipstick around your mouth and it provides a base for your lip product to stick to.

The Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil is creamy, long lasting, and waterproof! These are moisturizing and come in a multitude of colors.

Setting Spray Again

Yes we are doing this step again! Once you have completely finished your makeup, you should spray this liberally all over and then fan dry.

Still to this day my top favorite options for longest lasting setting sprays are the Urban Decay All Nighter and the Ofra Cosmetics Make Up Fixer Spray. Your makeup will stay vibrant, flawless, and in place after using these sprays. They also provide the perfect amount of hydration.

Do not touch your face!

The last thing is, throughout the day or night, seriously refrain from touching your face. This spreads oils from your hands which makes makeup break apart. It also brings germs to your face which can cause breakouts later on.

Just keep your hands to yourself, girl!

What do you do to keep your makeup in place? Let me know in the comments!
