How To Save Your Skin in the Winter

Welcome back to Haley’s Beauty Room! As I have mentioned many times and I am sure you are tired of hearing it, I have dry skin. Even in the summer my skin lacks moisture. Can you imagine how bad it gets during the long, cold, Michigan winters? Bad.

However, most people’s skin gets dry during this time frame, as the temperature is a lot colder and the air is much dryer. Your skin can really suffer through this time, making you uncomfortable and self conscious.

Are you tired of having itchy, dry skin that makes you uncomfortable? Are your lips flaking so much that you look like a lip balm hoarder? You’ve come to the right place my friends. If you are interested in how to save your skin this Winter, then keep on reading!

Cool it on the hot showers

As much as you may like stepping in to a hot shower on those frigid Winter mornings, that hot water is actually making your dry skin worse. Go for lukewarm water, as it doesn’t strip away oil from your skin.

While in the shower, also use a moisturizing body wash and in-shower body butter. My favorite moisturizing wash is the Aveeno Skin Relief Gentle Scent Body Wash for Sensitive Skin. This deeply moisturizes and the light scent will not irritate any skin conditions.

After cleansing, I go in with either my Lush Scrubee or Buffy. These two bars will gently exfoliate your dead skin away and leave a layer of shea butter on your skin. This provides a base for your moisturizer and will only add another layer to protect your skin.

Basically bathe in moisturizer

Okay, don’t literally bathe in moisturizer. Although I’m sitting here wondering how great it would be to jump in a bath full of coconut oil haha, but seriously. After bathing, and also multiple times throughout the day, you should be applying a thick moisturizer. Go for a thick body butter, like the Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter.

This extremely thick butter will absorb quickly and protect your skin. It also deeply hydrates and softens skin for about 24 hours. I apply this morning and night and my skin has never been more hydrated. There’s a reason why this butter has almost all 5 star reviews.

I also recommend getting dedicated hand and feet creams for daily and nighttime moisture. At night you should slather these creams on and then sleep with cotton socks and gloves over. It will lock in the moisture and provide hydration all night.

The Skinfix Ultra Rich Hand Cream is my favorite. It is packed with emollient oils and is free of fragrance, steroids, soy, parabens, and phthalates.

For your feet, go for the Curel Foot Therapy Soothing Cream. This thick cream really does soothe and moisturize dry cracked feet immediately. It has even softened some of my callouses. Use every night and you’ll see amazing results.

Up your water intake

I think I’ve mentioned this in every skin post of mine, but I do because it is one of the most important steps to healthy skin. You need to hydrate internally as well as externally. Drink tons of water and eat foods with a high water content.

This will help your skin stay hydrated and healthy, in conjunction with using thick moisturizers.

Don’t forget about your lips

I think as the days go on my lips are getting dryer and flakier in preparation for Winter. Honestly, it’s driving me nuts. That’s why I have started going for lip masks. Whether that be sheet masks or overnight sleeping masks.

My favorite so far has been the Lineage Lip Sleeping Mask. This mask has a softening balm texture that quickly absorbs. It has vitamin C, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and minerals to form a protective film over the lips to lock in moisture and active ingredients. A generous layer of this soothing mask at bedtime helps reduce flakiness.

During the day I go for my Memebox Nooni Water Blending Lip Oil. This oil is super silky but non-sticky. It instantly moisturizes, softens, and plumps your lips. It has 9 oils: Sunflower, Olive, Jojoba, Argan, Macadamia, Green Tea, Soy Bean, Ginger, and Spearmint. It deeply moisturizes lips and nourishes with vitamins A, C, and E. Finally, it has natural AHAs from Apple Water to exfoliate chapped and dry lips.

I recommend something that is oil based, as that will provide more moisture than a water based product. Another good option for the day is the Vaseline Soft Lips.

Use a humidifier

If the air is dry, why not try adding moisture back in to the air. Get a smaller humidifier and put it on your bedroom. While you sleep have it running so your skin can soak up all the goodness from the air and your moisturizers. Try this compact one from Target that is just $26.99.

Not only is a humidifier good for your skin, but it also eases breathing and helps with sinus issues. Studies have also shown that higher humidity levels significantly reduced the ability of airborne viruses to cause flu infections. Pair that with my previous post on how to avoid getting sick. Switch out your cleanser & moisturizer

Even though you may have a holy grail face wash, you might want to consider finding one for the Winter. Gravitate towards something that won’ strip your skin and will keep moisture in place.

I love my Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser. This is made with Greek yogurt and is rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins to gently cleanse. It will leave your skin soft and supple while reducing redness. It removes impurities and makeup and provides antibacterial benefits.

A cleansing oil may also work for your skin type. Try the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil to solve dryness, dullness, and uneven skin tone. It works great for all skin types. This cleanser is non-comedogenic, free of mineral oil and soap, and ophthalmologist tested for sensitive eye areas.

For your face moisturizer, you will want a heavier day and night cream. I personally love the No. 7 Beautiful Skin Night Cream for Dry/Very Dry Skin. This deeply hydrates and doesn’t irritate the skin. They also provide options for normal and oily skin, meaning we can all soak up the benefits of this!
