If you’re like me and love having a tan, even a slight tan year round then I’m sure you have tried many self tanners. Self tanners are a great option for people looking to avoid the tanning bed in the winter and not have to sit out in the sun for hours in the summer.
Being the pastey pale that I am, I’ve rounded up a list of the best self tanners around that give you that fabulous sun-kissed glow.
One of the most famous and well known self tanners is of course St. Tropez. They have been around for years and continually impress the masses. They offer many options for tanning products, but my favorite is by far the Classic Bronzing Mousse.
This mousse will definitely give you color, but it is a seamless color making your tan appear more natural. If you are looking for something to get you extremely dark the first go around, this probably isn’t for you. However, if you like to add color without looking like a Cheeto, this would be perfect for you. The mousse on this has green tint so it counteracts any warmth that would make your tan appear orange.
The smell on this is also fairly good. It does not have that typical “self tanner” smell that puts people off. It is also super easy to work with in terms of the mousse drying not too fast but fast enough to wear you don’t have to wait forever to put your clothes back on. You can pick up a bottle of this up in three different sizes; the largest size is 8.0 oz and is $42.00.
This brand is the newest of the top 5 to me. I discovered this at Ulta a few months ago and it has been the only self tanner that I’ve been wearing since. It is basically a knock off version of the St. Tropez, however it is just as good for a quarter of the price. There are two different tanners from this line that steal the show for me, the Fast Tanning Mousse and the Instant Self Tan Lotion Dark.
The mousse is awesome because you can get a dark color in only 3 hours whereas with most self tanners they need to develop for 4-6. It also states that you can even get some color in just an hour. This is great for those who have a last minute event and need to get some color fast. This mousse isn’t as easy to work with as the St. Tropez, as it dries down a bit faster, but as long as you use a mitt you should still get a seamless application.
My favorite tanner from this brand is definitely the Instant Self Tan Lotion as this gets me darker than any other self tanner. The lotion is so easy to work with and you have plenty of time to work it in to your skin before it dries down.
The lotion moisturizes your skin, for a healthy, glowy looking tan. It is also streak-free and lasts quite a bit longer than other tanners. As with the other tanners, this has green tint to it to make sure you are bronze and not orange. The second best thing about this brand is that everything is super affordable. Both of these self tanners are $12.99 and you get about 7 oz. of product!
Loving Tan is another huge brand within the self tanning scene. At one point I swear every beauty guru was talking about this, and they may still be. This is one product that is definitely worth the hype. You get such a dark color in a short amount of time that it’s almost too good to pass up.
The 2 HR Express is perfect when you need a dark tan in a flash. It also has great application qualities and no streaks. I think one of the main things I love about Loving Tan is how delicious all of their tanners smell. You definitely do not experience the typical tanner smell which is amazing. Only downside to this product is it is one of the most expensive. For a typical bottle you get 4 oz. for $39.95.
Finally, we have Tarte’s Brazilliance™ skin rejuvenating maracuja self tanner. The way this makes my skin feel after washing it off is incredible. You skin is so soft and hydrated that you’ll question that a self tanner really did that!
I love this tanner for that reason alone, but also because of the great color pay off and non-streaky formula. I will say though that this tanner does not get as dark as the other options, so if you’re looking for the smallest amount of color, I would go with this option or the St. Tropez. The lasting power is decent on this product and the blendibility is great. You can pick up 5.5 oz of this for $39.00.
I hope you enjoyed my favorite self tanners! Have you tried any of the above options? What are your favorite tanners? Let me know in the comments below!
