If you’re like me and obsess over exfoliating, then I’m sure you’ve tried almost every body scrub on the planet. However, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, those scrubs just don’t seem to cut it. The sugar/salt to liquid ratio is always off, meaning the scrub is more liquid than abrasive so you don’t get as much of an exfoliation. Maybe when you do find one with more exfoliation, the scent isn’t pleasing and you’re shelling out $$$ left and right.
Mainstream scrubs can also be packed with chemicals and drying agents that may make skin dryer or irritated. As someone who suffers from eczema, I am very conscientious of the products that I put on my skin because one wrong ingredient can mean a flare up that lasts for weeks.
If you’re looking for great scrubs that will save you $$$ and contain better ingredients that will nourish your skin, then I am prepared to share some of my favorite DIY recipes with you!
Coffee Sugar Scrub
This is definitely my absolute favorite. I make this one more than any of the others and always have a tub of this in my shower. This scrub has significantly reduced the cellulite in my thighs as well as drastically diminished the appearance of my stretch marks.
For this scrub you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 Cup Raw Sugar
- 1 Cup Coffee Grounds
- 1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
- 2 Tbsp Vitamin E Oil ( my favorite is JĀSÖN’s Vitamin E Oil, which I talked about in my morning skincare routine)
- Optional: Vanilla Essential Oil if you would like a sweeter scent
The caffeine in the coffee grounds help with cellulite and the oils moisturize and heal the skin. As a coffee lover the scrub really just appeals to my senses. Tip: as coffee grounds are black, and your shower will be covered in them after using this, bring a plastic cup in with you to help wash away the evidence.
Sea Salt & Lime Scrub
I found this recipe on Karissa’s Vegan Kitchen and it is like a margarita for your skin. Sea salt is packed with minerals such as magnesium, sodium, and calcium that are fabulous for your skin while lime lightens dark spots and fights bacteria. This recipe also contains olive oil which is packed with vitamins and antioxidants.
For this scrub you will need:
- 1/2 cup sea salt
- 2 tablespoons of oil
- 1/2 teaspoon lime zest
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
Skin Issues Scrub
This next scrub I call my Skin Issues Scrub because it helps to alleviate issues such as body acne and keratosis pilaris or chicken skin. I have pretty bad keratosis on the backs of my arms and this scrub helps clear it right up.
For this scrub you will need:
- 1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 2 Tbsp Raw Honey
- 1/3 Cup Raw Sugar
Honey and lemon juice are both fabulous antibacterials, meaning they will help with acne and skin issues. Honey and coconut oil are also great for moisturizing and soothing of the skin.
Bonus: Cinnamon Lip Scrub
In addition to the scrub that we need on our bodies, it’s also a good idea to always have a lip scrub on hand, especially during the winter months. A lip scrub keeps our lips hydrated, smooth, and perfect for makeup application. My favorite recipe comes from FoodFunFamily.com and you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 drops Cinnamon essential oil
- 1 tablespoon Coconut oil
- ½ teaspoon Vitamin E oil
This smells like Fall in a container and I just love it! Keep watching my page for a Fall themed blog coming in a few months!
